This site now hosts a complete archive of PDF versions of The Problemist Supplement, from 1992 to the current year. This magazine is aimed mainly at newcomers to chess composition, so it is recommended for those who want to find out more about chess problems. You can find the archive here.
In the May 1950 issue of The Problemist A. W. Mongredien published an article on three-movers where two white pieces need to clear a lateral battery line, and challenged composers to show a diagonal example. The four thematic variations in Robin Matthews’ problem show excellent unity, with the bishop clearing the rook’s path to h8 while performing an anticipatory closure of a second line. 1...Ba3 gives a fifth line closure. One small weakness is that 1...Be7 defeats the threat in two ways, allowing both 2...Rh8 and 2...Bxg5. Note the skill with which a threat capable of inducing the required defences has been arranged.
