Guy Wills Chandler (1889-1980) was a controversial figure in BCPS history, but indisputably one of the Society’s great servants. President from 1956 to 1958, he acted as Secretary and Treasurer from 1952 until 1980, having already held one or other of the posts from 1919 to 1932. He was also responsible for book sales and magazine distribution. From 1911 to 1921 he conducted one of the finest newspaper columns in chess problem history, that of the Hampshire Telegraph and Post (see the article in the sample issue here). His first problem was published in 1906 and the last (given here) just a few months before his death. May we all compose as well at 90 years old!
