1981-1982 – Report from The Problemist

Lloyd's Bank Problem Solving Championship, 1981-1982

Written by Brian Stephenson

The following report is taken from The Problemist, March 1982, p. 215, and is by the then editor, Colin Vaughan.

With a score of 18½ pt out ol 22, David Friedgood iust pipped Jonathan Mestel by ½ pt to take the Championship and first prize of f50 on January 16th at the Royal Horse Guards Hotel, London. Tony Lewis was third with 16% pt, followed by lain Sinclair (Glasgow), who was 2nd last year, M. D. Thornton (Stirling),6th last year, A. J. Roycroft (Colindale), a new name in the finals, but no stranger to us, and Gordon Pollard (Wallingford). Grandmaster Dr John Nunn was unable to compete because of prior commitments.

David's success at the third attempt follows close on the heels of his attaining his World Master Title, and we offer hearty congratulations on both counts. Also to our own Tony Lewis, third for the second successive year. and Gordon Pollard seventh for the third time.

David's winning margin would have looked much more comfortable had he not slipped up on a two mover by John Rice in the first session, but his lead of 2 pt over Jonathan Mestel from tne session was sufficient to carry the day when he scored only 9½ against Jonathan's maximum of 11 pt in the second half.

The usual acknowledgments and thanks are due, particularly to John Rice for finding the problems and organising and marking the rounds, to Lloyds Banks for their sponsorship, and especially Mrs Grace Waterman for supervising all the paper work and organising the final.

If any reader has a copy of the problems used at the final of this event I would be very pleased to hear from them.
