This week, we return to the helpmate, with a problem which I first saw in Christopher
Jones’ excellent Helpmates column in The Problemist. It shows not only fine
thematic twinning of the two solutions, but some really interesting play as well!
The two solutions are:
1.Sg2+ Kg4 2.Bf4 Sb3 3.Sd2 Sc1# and
1.Sg3+ Kg5 2.Rf4 Sxc2 3.Sc4 Sb4#.
In each solution, we have a Grimshaw move to f4, which is an anticipatory
check prevention allowing another black piece (the Se4 or Se3) to
selfblock and interfere with the bishop or rook from the rear.
