A two-mover which the judges of its tourney considered the entry with
the most picturesque theme. Solvers need to find the thematic try to
fully appreciate the idea.
Try 1.Bxc2? threat 2.Rd1. 1...Bxf7 a 2.Ba4 A;
1...Rxg2 b 2.Rc7 B, with other variations as
in the actual play, but 1...e2!
Key 1.R4xc2! threat 2.Rd1. 1...Bxf7 a 2.Rc7 B;
1...Rxg2 b 2.Ba4 A; 1...e2 2.Rd2; 1...Sf4 or Se6 2.fxe8Q;
1...Sf6 or Se7 2.Q(x)e7; 1...Rxg6 2.Rc7; 1...Kxd8 2.Rd1.
Long range pins form the basis of a clear-cut scheme for obtaining reciprocal change of mates after guards
are opened on d8. Dual avoidance is also shown, since each time it is an effect of the defence which prevents
the alternative mate from working. The problem has its weaknesses – there is an unprovided flight and
the threat piece is out of play, but the solver can hardly overlook the try.
Jacob Hoover: Very nice indeed.
