Siegfried Brehmer
3rd Commend, Olympic Tourney, 1948 (version)
There are potential Nowotnys at b6 and e6 which currently fail because both the a7 bishop and e8 rook are
guarding e3. The key 1.Qh6 threatens 2.Rc1+ dxc1Q 3.Qxc1, and Black can only defend by moving
a piece to e3, removing its guard. Hence the variations 1...Re3 2.Qb6 Bxb6 3.Rb2 or 2...Rxb6 3.Sxe3
and 1...Be3 2.Qe6 Rxe6 3.Bb3 or 2...Bxe6 3.Sxe3, also 2...Rxb4 3.Sxb4.
Jacob Hoover: The only way Black can parry the threat is by blocking the queen's X-ray guard of c1.
This is done by moving either the e8-rook or a7-bishop to e3. Either move removes a guard from e3 and allows
White a Nowotny interference.
Satanick Mukhuty: Nice Nowotnys.
