Reciprocal helpmate in 3
b) Move the white king to e1
In this reciprocal helpmate Black starts and helps White to a position where Black can mate White on his third move, or play a different move which allows White to mate on his third move (as in a standard helpmate). Michel Caillaud’s light twin is an excellent example of the genre.
a) 1.Bb3 Bc2 2.Be6 Re4 3.Bf5 mate or 3.Rb6 Ba4 mate.
b) 1.Rd7 Re7 2.Rd2 Be4 3.Re2 mate or 3.Kb6 Rb7 mate.
In a) each bishop mates on the square initially occupied by the other, and the rooks do likewise in b). In addition there is a white Grimshaw at e4 and all of the mates are models. A good advertisement for the reciprocal helpmate.
