Friedrich Chlubna
A gentle start to the New Year, with a problem which is not lacking in humour.
With black guards on f4 and f5 a mate by the f2 pawn looks unlikely. 1.f4? threatens 2.Rf6 mate, but the
knight capture refutes. 1.f3 threatens 2.Re7+ Kf5 3.Re5 and the only defence is
1...Sxg3. Now 2.f4 can only be met by 2...Se4, which allows 3.f5. A neat example
of a Roman decoy.
