The imitator is a fairy piece which copies each move, and a move is only legal if the imitator can copy it. In the diagram, 1.Kb6 (Ih3) is legal (since Black cannot play KxK), and gives check (since White can play KxK), however Black can defend with 1...Bf6 (If1).
