The BCPS Library contains over a thousand volumes of material on chess problems and endgame studies (books, periodicals, manuscript items). Members are entitled to visit the Library, either for research or for recreation, and subject to certain restrictions to borrow from it. The library is split between two locations as described in the following paragraph.
Books and general archive material are with Steve Giddins (the Librarian) in Rochester, while magazines are housed with Brian Stephenson (the Magazine Curator) in Sheffield. At present Brian also holds a number of archive items, particularly composers’ and collectors’ scrapbooks and part of the White-Hume Collection, but it is anticipated that the scrapbooks will eventually be transferred to Rochester, once the problems they contain have been entered onto Brian’s Meson Chess Problem Database.
Both library holders welcome queries from members, by post or via the ‘Contact’ item in the menu above. In the event that members are unsure to whom a particular query should be directed, please contact Steve Giddins in the first instance. Both library-holders welcome visitors by appointment, and photocopies or scans of library material can be made available, within reason, for a small charge.
